The Great Canadian Electricity Map

ECAM is bringing the Great Canadian Electricity Map to schools, career fairs, community events, and other learning environments across Manitoba.

At seven by nine metres, the map rolls out across a gymnasium-sized floor and gives students and the public a unique, hands-on way to explore how electricity is generated, transmitted, and used across Canada.

It puts Canada's electricity system into perspective. The map shows the country's geography, major electricity transmission systems, and generating infrastructure in their geographic locations. It includes nuclear, hydro, wind, solar, natural gas, and coal generation, along with battery storage facilities and lithium mines. It is a powerful way to see how the systems behind electricity connect communities, businesses, industry, and everyday life.

This engaging resource turns complex concepts into curiosity-driven learning, helping answer questions like:

• How is electricity generated and delivered?
• What do electricians and the electrical industry do?
• What are transmission lines and why are they important?
• How will electrification shape Canada's future?
• What career opportunities exist in the skilled trades?

The map has over 65 QR codes placed on the map that link to videos of actual people speaking about their roles, and the QR codes are geographically linked to where these individuals work. There are Engineers, technicians, tradespeople, and plenty of corporate services professionals speaking about their passion for the industry and why they do what they do every day. From the far north to the east and west coasts and everywhere in-between, there is a role that speaks to most young learners.
